Are you starting to get itchy feet? Summertime is the perfect time to travel, so why not take advantage of the day trips around Gainesville? Most of these are places you can visit for the day, but there are a few overnight stay recommendations. Here are a few places to check out this summer.
St. Augustine
Just over an hour and a half east to the Coast of Florida, you can head to St. Augustine. It’s the country’s oldest city, and it’s steeped in history. Take a historic walking tour or visit some of the most historic sites in the United States. It’s also great to see the beach and enjoy outdoor activities.
Tarpon Springs
If you head in the other direction and a little south, you can get to the small town of Tarpon Springs in about two and a half hours. While it’s not far from the booming metropolis of Tama, Tarpon Springs has an entirely different feel. Greek immigrants settled in the area, and its primary industry was sponge diving. There are fun shops to visit; if you love Greek food, this is the place to be.
Amelia Island
Two hours northeast of Gainesville is Amelia Island. This island community has a small downtown with restaurants and shops. Visit Fernandina Beach or the Fort Clinch State Park. You can spend the day doing outdoor activities before heading back home in the evening.
Savannah, Georgia
While this trip may not be something you can do in a day, it is worth it. Savannah, Georgia is just under a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Gainesville, so you could do it as a day trip, but we recommend you stay overnight. If for no other reason, you want to check out one of the many haunted tours of the city to experience what makes Savannah unique. But there are plenty of things to do during the day, including a trip to Tybee Island.
Disney Springs
If paying for a day at Walt Disney World isn’t in the cards, you can still have some fun there. Disney Springs is open to the public and features incredible restaurants with the same décor flair as the parks. You can shop or enjoy a virtual reality experience without paying the park prices for a day trip. You can get to Disney Springs from Gainesville in under two hours.
